    <description>&lt;P&gt;Hi,&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;I am able to connect to beeline like this&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;!connect jdbc:hive2://&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;But when i type&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;!connect jdbc:hive2://hostname:10000/default org.apache.hive.jdbc.HiveDriver&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;or !connect jdbc:hive2://hostname:10000/default&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;After giving the username and password&lt;BR /&gt;it gives me an error&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Error: Could not open connection to jdbc:hive2://&amp;lt;host-name&amp;gt;:10000: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused (state=08S01,code=0)&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Any suggestions??&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;I am trying to connect with Cognos with this connection String but since it is not getting connected to beeline with ip and port,it is not allowing me to connect in cognos too but without giving ip and port,it works fine in beeline but still giving error in cognos.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;The Properties in hive-site.xml i have set for hive 2 are:-&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;lt;property&amp;gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&amp;nbsp; &amp;lt;name&amp;gt;hive.server2.thrift.port&amp;lt;/name&amp;gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&amp;nbsp; &amp;lt;value&amp;gt;10000&amp;lt;/value&amp;gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&amp;nbsp; &amp;lt;description&amp;gt;Port number of HiveServer2 Thrift interface.&lt;BR /&gt;&amp;nbsp; Can be overridden by setting $HIVE_SERVER2_THRIFT_PORT&amp;lt;/description&amp;gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&amp;lt;/property&amp;gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&amp;lt;property&amp;gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&amp;nbsp; &amp;lt;name&amp;gt;hive.server2.thrift.bind.host&amp;lt;/name&amp;gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&amp;nbsp; &amp;lt;value&amp;gt;Hostname&amp;lt;/value&amp;gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&amp;nbsp; &amp;lt;description&amp;gt;Bind host on which to run the HiveServer2 Thrift interface.&lt;BR /&gt;&amp;nbsp; Can be overridden by setting $HIVE_SERVER2_THRIFT_BIND_HOST&amp;lt;/description&amp;gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&amp;lt;/property&amp;gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;lt;property&amp;gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&amp;nbsp; &amp;lt;name&amp;gt;hive.metastore.uris&amp;lt;/name&amp;gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&amp;nbsp; &amp;lt;value&amp;gt;thrift://hostname:9083&amp;lt;/value&amp;gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&amp;nbsp; &amp;lt;description&amp;gt;Thrift uri for the remote metastore.       <description>I must be misunderstanding the issue. If you need to connect HiveServer2&lt;BR /&gt;via JDBC, then the URL given for beeline should be one that has&lt;BR /&gt;HiveServer2's hostname/port.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;If you need to connect to MetaStore via thrift, then you need to give&lt;BR /&gt;MetaStore server's hostname and port number to your thrift client.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;HiveServer2 server and MetaStore server are two different servers running&lt;BR /&gt;on different host/port.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;</description>

      <description>Those would be what you're given by the HiverServer2 admin. If your&lt;BR /&gt;HiverServer2 instance is running with the default, then just leave them&lt;BR /&gt;blank.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;</description>
