Restarting VM should reload the frozen/unresponsive gnome-desktop. If you can go to commandline then from there you can type: "gnome-shell --replace" to restart gnome desktop.

I've followed the instructions contained in 'HDP-Admin-1-Download-VM-SetupGuide-Rev1-1', using an existing VM on Oracle Virtualbox. The VM's memory is set to 10GB and 4 CPUs have been configured for it, and video memory is set to 64MB. The virtualbox is running on Ubuntu 15.10. Though the Admin lab VM runs and starts all service components, the Ubuntu desktop is, unfortunately, never displayed. Any suggestions?

Thanks. I have decided to switch over to VMWare from VirtualBox.
