OK, I'm a noob when it comes to VMs. Here is what I learned. Both Oracle Virtualbox and VMware will hit this problem on a secure boot configured ubuntu system. That is because they do not sign the drivers. You will need to generate a key and have it registered during boot. From that point either VM ought to work. My VMware is now.

Link to good overview on how to resolve: https://stegard.net/2016/10/virtualbox-secure-boot-ubuntu-fail/

Have VMware wkstn 14.1.1 build 7528167 on ubuntu 17.10.

Installed HDP_2.6.4_vmware_01_02_2018_1325.

Imports OK, but when I try and start the VM, I get Error - could not open /dev/vmmon: No such file or directory. Please make sure that the kernel module 'vmmon' is loaded. Click OK. 2nd Error - Failed to initialize monitor device.

But when I click OK this time, the VM shuts down, then VMware closes, so there is no possibility of troubleshooting it from the VM CentOS, which kind of makes sense - no monitor, how can I do anything to fix?

DISAPPOINTING. A while back I loaded HDP and the install went like a champ.

Any chance this will be fixed anytime soon? Anyone have a suggestion on how I might fix?
