There are definitely known bugs with corrupt LZO that were fixed since Impala 2.2, but since you can do the count() that rules out many of them.

 

Could be some flavour of IMPALA-1619 if there are very long strings in the text file. There were also a set of problems with out-of-range timestamp values (e.g. https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/IMPALA-2868) that could be hitting you if you have some invalid or out-of-range timestamp values (e.g. dates that have year <1400 or >=10000).

 

I'd recommend upgrading to a more recent CDH version if at all possible, whatever you're running into has most likely been fixed since Impala 2.2.

Well, abut upgrading, not possible at the time, this is an Oracle BDA on a client with CDH distribution, and upgrading will involve upgrading from Oracle perspective that will mean: firmware, OS, hadoop, etc like last time we did it, and this cluster supports a 24x7 service.

 

About timestamp ranges, if you see both of my queries, none of them uses a column on select clause, just the partition column, and if both queries validates all columns, then both queries should fail on a case of timestamp out of range value, and not only the one with "GROUP BY" clause.

 

I've been doing some testing, and it seems, by what ever reason, now it doesn't like "GROUP BY" clause and many simple queries fail using it. 

 

It fails with all partitions I have tested, event the ones that worked before last friday, now they fail.

 

And as I pointed out on my previous post, we have another Oracle BDA with exactly the same CDH distribution and impala version, were I copied the data of this partition, and in that cluster it works.

 

So my impression is that for some reason: we have reached some limit or metadata is corrupted.

 

When I say some limit, may be some combination of number os schemas, tables and partitions defined, and that is why since last Friday everything started to fail.

 

When I say metadata corruption, may be tables definitions, partitions definitions or stats for those tables/partitions got corrupted and that is why it now fails.

 

Really don't know th reason. It is very strange.

Hmm, yeah that is strange. The unnamed call frame hints that it's crashing in JIT-compiled code, which suggests something happening during query execution - either corrupt data, or it going down a different code path (maybe spilling to disk?). 

 

There's a 2GB limit on various memory allocations, including strings and certain uncompressed text files like Snappy that need to be decompressed in one shot, that has caused problems like this before (IMPALA-1619). I can't think why that would cause problems on one cluster but not another unless the files were loaded differently, but that was definitely a frequent problem until we fixed it in a later release.

 

There are various ways I can think of to try to figure out what may be happening differently during query execution.

 

The main way I can think that a metadata problem would reliably cause a crash like this is if the stats were corrupt and somehow lead to a bad execution plan.


Comparing "Explain" plans is always helpful - if they're the same, that rules out one class of problems. You can also compare stats, partitions, files, etc to see if there is any difference there (with the various commands in https://www.cloudera.com/documentation/enterprise/5-4-x/topics/impala_show.html).

 

It may be difficult to get a query profile if it's crashing during query execution (if one node crashes and the coordinator stays up, you can get a partial one). If you see "SpilledPartitions" on one but not another that could be a clue that the difference is that one query is spilling to disk but not another. You can also infer that the query is under memory pressure in various other ways - in Cloudera Manager you can look at the memory graphs to see if the memory consumption is near its limit, or on the http://impalad-hostname:25000/memz?detailed=true page to see if the process or query is approach it's memory limit: you can compare limit=X to consumption=X at the Process Pool and Query level to see if that's correlated with the crash.

Hi,

 

I think I have found the problem or how to avoid it. It seems that the source process that generates the files we upload have been changed. It has been changed so last line of generated CSV files foesnt have a final "\n" character (0x0A).

 

It seem that impala doesn't like this for TEXT CSV LZO files. Editing the files and adding a final "\n" to last line, makes everything to work again.

 

It is strange for me as a "\n" on the last line means there is another line (empty line). The team removed it because it generates problems on other part of the system and it seems impala doesn't like it.

 

Now that I know what to look for I have found the registered issue:

But it says it is fixed in version 2.2 and I'm using version v2.2.0-cdh5 and it still happens.

 

So,

Is it really fixed on final version?

Looks like you actually hit https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/IMPALA-1973, which wasn't fixed until Impala 2.3.


The fix was backported to CDH 5.4.1 (Impala 2.2.1) so any maintenance releases in that series will have the fix:
