Ambari not using available repos

RHEL 7.2 on Power8

ambari-server-2.5.0.0-1096.ppc64le

Trying to install HDP 2.6.

For some reason the install (Install, Start, and Test part of the installation) is failing. It appears that it is having problems using the repos that are available to it. For example:

2017-08-09 18:35:03,706 - Skipping installation of existing package curl
2017-08-09 18:35:03,706 - Package['hdp-select'] {'retry_on_repo_unavailability': False, 'retry_count': 5}

So it cannot install hadoop_2_6_0_0_598-mapreduce. But if I go to the command line, I can install this:

I don't understand why Ambari is having such a problem using the HDP and HDP-Utils repositories. They are configured like this:

[root@hdplab80 yum.repos.d]# cat HDP.repo
[HDP-2.6]
name=HDP-2.6
baseurl=http://private-repo-1.hortonworks.com/HDP/centos7-ppc/2.x/updates/2.6.0.0-598

path=/
enabled=1
gpgcheck=0[root@hdplab80 yum.repos.d]# cat HDP-UTILS.repo
[HDP-UTILS-1.1.0.21]
name=HDP-UTILS-1.1.0.21
baseurl=http://public-repo-1.hortonworks.com/HDP-UTILS-1.1.0.21/repos/ppc64le

path=/
enabled=1

Can anyone spot what is wrong here? Essentially, Ambari is not using the repos available to it, I think.

Thanks in advance.

Based on your output it looks like you have configured proxy.

So i guess in that case you should also set proxy inside your "/etc/yum.conf" file something like following so that the yum will also start using the same proxy.

# cat /etc/yum.conf
[main]
proxy=http://x.x.x.x:3128

cachedir=/var/cache/yum/$basearch/$releasever
keepcache=0
debuglevel=2
logfile=/var/log/yum.log
exactarch=1
obsoletes=1
gpgcheck=1
plugins=1
installonly_limit=3

.

The perform a yum clean and then try again.

# yum clean all

.

@John Wright

Looking at your HDP.repo I see 2 different URL's one is private and the other is the official public is that a coincidence?

baseurl=http://private-repo-1.hortonworks.com/HDP/centos7-ppc/2.x/updates/2.6.0.0-598

baseurl=http://public-repo-1.hortonworks.com/HDP-UTILS-1.1.0.21/repos/ppc64le

Please correct that with the hortonworks publc repos and run the below commands

yum clean all
yum repolist

Hope that works

Hi @Geoffrey Shelton Okot,

Well spotted. I switched both URLs to use public and then switched them both to use private. The result was that one or other other was then 404 not found. I've switched the URLs back to their originals now.

So I still have the problem that Ambari is not able to use the repositories I have configured. But, if I drop to the command line, I can install whatever package the HDP installation is having a problem with.

There must be some difference between how Ambari is using the repo and how I am using it from the CLI. Here's a log of one of the errors:

The packages it is now skipping I have installed manually from the CLI. Obviously this is not a solution to the problem as there are hundreds of packages to install across all nodes.

Any pointers appreciated.

@John Wright

As you have changed the repo hence you should do yum clean all on all nodes ... because they we re using other repo earlier.

# yum clean all

.

Then retry again.

Additionally from the problematic host please try check if the repo data is accessible or not (just to isolate the Network Or Proxy issue).

Example: (from the host where yum installation failed)

# wget http://private-repo-1.hortonworks.com/HDP/centos7-ppc/2.x/updates/2.6.0.0-598/repodata/repomd.xml

@John Wright

I think your repos is wrong. I just tried downloading on the hdp repo for RHEL/CentOS/Oracle LINUX 7

Here is what I did, note please backup your /etc/yum.repos.d/hdp.repo before overwriting with the below code.

wget -nv http://public-repo-1.hortonworks.com/HDP/centos7/2.x/updates/2.6.0.3/hdp.repo -O /etc/yum.repos.d/hdp.repo

In the above I assume you are running one of the above flavors of Linux

#VERSION_NUMBER=2.6.0.3-8
[HDP-2.6.0.3]
name=HDP Version - HDP-2.6.0.3
baseurl=http://public-repo-1.hortonworks.com/HDP/centos7/2.x/updates/2.6.0.3
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=http://public-repo-1.hortonworks.com/HDP/centos7/2.x/updates/2.6.0.3/RPM-GPG-KEY/RPM-GPG-KEY-Jenkins
enabled=1
priority=1
[HDP-UTILS-1.1.0.21]
name=HDP-UTILS Version - HDP-UTILS-1.1.0.21
baseurl=http://public-repo-1.hortonworks.com/HDP-UTILS-1.1.0.21/repos/centos7
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=http://public-repo-1.hortonworks.com/HDP/centos7/2.x/updates/2.6.0.3/RPM-GPG-KEY/RPM-GPG-KEY-Jenkins
enabled=1
priority=1

Then do

cat  /etc/yum.repos.d/hdp.repo

After validating the contents then run the below

yum clean all
yum repolist

You should see the good repo contents , now you can continue to delpoy your cluster sucessfully

@Jay SenSharma and @Geoffrey Shelton Okot

Thank you very much for your replies.

I'm not using the repos listed here:

https://docs.hortonworks.com/HDPDocuments/Ambari-2.5.1.0/bk_ambari-installation-ppc/content/select_v...

(Remembering that I am installing this on ppc64le)

The wget works so access to the repository is not a problem. However, I am still seeing failures when Ambari tries to do the install:

With these repositories looking like this:

[root@hdplab81 yum.repos.d]# cat HDP.repo

And, as before, Ambari fails but from the CLI I can install whatever package has failed from Ambari.

Thanks for the help on this. Really appreciate it.

@John Wright

I am now almost sure your local repository wasn't well configured,initially your hdp.repo had the below content

baseurl=http://private-repo-1.hortonworks.com/HDP/centos7-ppc/2.x/updates/2.6.0.0-598
baseurl=http://public-repo-1.hortonworks.com/HDP-UTILS-1.1.0.21/repos/ppc64le

With a local repository your baseurl should have been like either of the below

http://FQDN_local_webserver/HDP/xxxxx
http://Local_IP/HDP/xxxxx

Both URL's should be accessible to the ambari server

Please have a look at this Hortonworks document ,once your internal repo is well configure and firewall rules between the nodes configured you should be able to run the Ambari cluster setup successfully

Sorry, had to go and work on something less interesting...

Came back to this today with a fresh head. Managed to configure the local repos for HDP and HDP-UTILS by pulling down the appropriate tar files. However, I am now having a problem I didn't have before.

The "Confirm hosts" section is now failing. Looks like the ambari-server and ambari-agents are not talking to each other. Here's the error:

Not sure what's happened. I did run a 'yum update' on all nodes before retrying this. I've followed a procedure where I emptied the ambari server keys from the master node (note that I could not find any keys for the ambari agents which was interesting).

So perhaps a certificate problem of some sort? I saw one thread which suggested it could be related to Python so here's my level of Python:

[root@hdplab80 conf]# rpm -qa | grep ^python-libs
python-libs-2.7.5-58.el7.ppc64le

Passwordless SSH between all the nodes is fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

@John Wright

The easiest way to resolve this issue is to install ambari-agent on all the hosts including the ambari host

# yum install -y ambari-agent

Then edit the ambari.ini found in

# vi /etc/ambari-agent/conf/ambari-agent.ini

Look for the below first entry and make sure the hostname below is the FQDN of your ambari server

@Geoffrey Shelton Okot Thanks for your continued support on this!

Did as you said and now I get a very short error:

Registering with the server...
Registration with the server failed.

Even tried changing the /etc/python/cert-verification.cfg file to the below but that made no difference. I did cycle httpd, ambari-server, and ambari-agents but that made no difference.

[https]
verify=disable

If I try automatic install/registration, I get this error:

Not sure where to go with this next. Tempted to rebuild from scratch but can't help but think I'll hit the same problems.
