I have downloaded the HDP 2.4 Sandbox for Oracle Virtual Machine. Import and starting was quite successful. I was able to see the login prompt and was able to log in into the console. But I couldn't get the "Graphical Desktop Environment" this time.
Is the Graphical Desktop on provided with this release or dropped ?
You probably need to install the linux Gnome UI for Desktop Environment. Below is an public blog which you can try.
The sandbox doesn't come with a graphical desktop but you can install it as Jitendra said. To you use the sandbox you will need Hadoop tools more than the Sandbox in itself. You will mainly use Ambari for administration and data access (through view). You will also use tools like Zeppelin for data exploration.

I know it's a fairly old post / question but google keeps bringing this up as one of the top search results in this topic. I've managed to find a workaround for the GUI issue in HDP 2.6.5+, and I've also created a step-by-step guide to do so. It's available at https://blog.hegistvan.net/2018/08/how-to-install-gnome-on-top-of-hdp.html
Hope it helps,
