Expected State FINISHED but found RUNNING SQL Error in Hive View Query Editor

We are getting the following error in Hive query editor. This error occurs inconsistently with identical SQL and happens across different web browsers. I can tell when I will get the error after the query is started because it shows a successful status immediately, before the query would be finished. When the error does not occur there is a running status first and then a completed status. In this case, the duration of the overall process is 10 seconds or so.

We do not think it is a permission issue but maybe a timeout setting in Ambari? "trace":"org.apache.ambari.view.hive.client.HiveErrorStatusException: H190 Unable to fetch results metadata. Re: Expected State FINISHED but found RUNNING SQL Error in Hive View Query Editor

Master Collaborator

This might be a product issue in the way it determines the completion of the query, not sure if there is any quick resolution by tweaking any timeout values.

Re: Expected State FINISHED but found RUNNING SQL Error in Hive View Query Editor

Do select * queries work ok? Think I saw this as well but it was an intermittent issue. Maybe try restarting Hive?

Re: Expected State FINISHED but found RUNNING SQL Error in Hive View Query Editor

Yep it is intermittent. Is this perhaps related to HiveServer2-site.xml in /etc/hive/2.3.0.0-2557/0/conf.server/hiveserver2-site.xml not configured by Ambari? There is no Ranger, but they are using LDAP with Ambari view.

Re: Expected State FINISHED but found RUNNING SQL Error in Hive View Query Editor

A resolution is underway for Ambari 2.1.3

@Ancil McBarnett, @Artem Ervits

I'm using Ambari 2.2.1 but facing this issue, Do I need to make any configuration changes anywhere?
