HiveMetastore & Hiveserver2 Failed to start On HortonWorks Hadoop cluster ?

New Contributor

Hello HW community,
I have a problem with my HiveMetastore & Hiveserver2 dont start at all due to the database connexion with the jdbc driver.
i proprelly executed the "https://docs.hortonworks.com/HDPDocuments/Ambari-2.6.1.5/bk_ambari-administration/content/using_hive... " i have the 3 hive users on mysql, i created the hive database and linked the mysql-connector-java.jar to my ambari-server. I tried some solution kind of replace the "localhost" in the Database URL by the host name or the ip address too, but same error.

PS: all the others services are turning.

My error is :

stderr:

Loading class `com.mysql.jdbc.Driver'. This is deprecated. The new driver class is `com.mysql.cj.jdbc.Driver'. The driver is automatically registered via the SPI and manual loading of the driver class is generally unnecessary.
Wed Apr 10 12:02:45 CEST 2019 WARN: Establishing SSL connection without server's identity verification is not recommended. According to MySQL 5.5.45+, 5.6.26+ and 5.7.6+ requirements SSL connection must be established by default if explicit option isn't set. For compliance with existing applications not using SSL the verifyServerCertificate property is set to 'false'. You need either to explicitly disable SSL by setting useSSL=false, or set useSSL=true and provide truststore for server certificate verification.

Hurrah we are now there, thats the error I was expecting now this is a case closed.

Validate the hostname by running

# hostname -f

This should give you the FQDN

The error below is very simple its a privilege issue with the hive user and database creation script you run, you didn't give the correct privileges to the hive user "Access denied for user 'hive'@'master.rh.bigdata.cluster' to database 'hive'"

To resolve the above please do the following assumptions

Root password = gr3atman

Hive password = hive

Hostname = master.rh.bigdata.cluster

mysql -uroot -pgr3atman
mysql> GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON hive.* to 'hive'@'localhost' identified by 'hive';
mysql> GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON hive.* to 'hive'@'master.rh.bigdata.cluster' identified by 'hive';
mysql> GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON hive.* TO 'hive'@'master.rh.bigdata.cluster';
mysql> flush privileges;

All of the above should succeed. Now your hive should fire up Bravo !!

@Adil BAKKOURI

You have a couple of issues, could you first align your MySQL server time to your local time.

Can you re-run this command

# Check your databases system time

mysql> select now();
+---------------------+
| now()               |
+---------------------+
| 2019-04-13 20:41:04 |
+---------------------+

There are three places where the timezone might be set in MySQL in the file "my.cnf" in the [mysqld] section by setting

default-time-zone='+00:00'

To set it use either one:

mysql> SELECT @@session.time_zone;
+---------------------+
| @@session.time_zone |
+---------------------+
| SYSTEM              |
+---------------------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

Now you can set it i.e

SET time_zone = 'Europe/Helsinki'; SET time_zone = "+00:00"; SET @@session.time_zone = "+00:00";

# Re-Install the mysql jdbc connector

yum install -y mysql-connector-java

# Setup Ambari

ambari-server setup --jdbc-db=mysql --jdbc-driver=/usr/share/java/mysql-connector-java.jar

You may need to recreate the hive user and schema and then after a successful startup, you can drop the old user and schema.

Assuming your old hive user was [hiveold]

# New Hive user assuming the root user password is {welcome1}

mysql -u root -pwelcome1
create database hivedb;
CREATE USER 'hive'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY '{hive_password}';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO 'hive'@'localhost';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON hivedb.* TO 'hive'@'%';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON hivedb.* TO 'hive'@'localhost' WITH GRANT OPTION;
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON hivedb.* to 'hive'@'localhost' identified by '{hive_password}';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON hivedb.* to 'hive'@'{YOUR_HOST_FQDN}' identified by '{hive_password}';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON hivedb.* TO 'hive'@'{YOUR_HOST_FQDN}';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON hivedb.* TO 'hive'@'%' WITH GRANT OPTION;
FLUSH PRIVILEGES; quit;

After all the above now try to configure hive through Ambari and after saving the configuration your hive should start normally.

Please keep me posted.

What's your OS and Version? I have done hundreds of HDP installation never got this blockage!! What's the current error?
Can you share the below logs?

This should be a driver issue please share any error

Most production HDP clusters run on Ubuntu so I don't see why yours should fail. Ping on LinkedIn! If your database MySQL version 5.6 please can you check the database engine

SELECT table_name, table_schema, engine FROM information_schema.tables;

For all HDP products, it should show InnoDB like below for hive

| PARTITION_KEYS                               | hive               | InnoDB             |
| PARTITION_KEY_VALS                           | hive               | InnoDB             |
| PARTITION_PARAMS                             | hive               | InnoDB             |
| PART_COL_PRIVS                               | hive               | InnoDB             |
| PART_COL_STATS                               | hive               | InnoDB             |
| PART_PRIVS                                   | hive               | InnoDB             |
| ROLES                                        | hive               | InnoDB             |
| ROLE_MAP                                     | hive               | InnoDB             |
