Ambari comes with its own supported HDP versions from which you can select the components. Its better to install tested components. One of doc link - https://docs.hortonworks.com/HDPDocuments/Ambari/Ambari-2.2.2.0/index.html

you will need to read documentation on custom stacks, it's possible but not a trivial task, https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/AMBARI/Defining+a+Custom+Stack+and+Services

What is the reason for this? HDP is as close to the trunk as you can get outside of Apache and since it was certified by ODPi it shares a standard spec across all Hadoop distributions that certify this spec.

Re: I am trying to install plain vanilla apache hadoop using Ambari. Need help on this.

yes i know that but i want to make my own stack. so need to build from binaries.

refer to the wiki link I provided or use something like Apache Bigtop to wire up your own bits with their version definitions http://bigtop.apache.org/. Good luck!

Re: I am trying to install plain vanilla apache hadoop using Ambari. Need help on this.

Thanks Artem for above links. I looked at those and cloned BigTop github repo on my system. I tried to install BIGTOP through ambari but i did'nt get success. I also had a look at https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/AMBARI/Defining+a+Custom+Stack+and+Services but i find only the information to define custom service not stack through apache hadoop or for any other binary.

how to define my own stack and add services(HDFS,YARN etc) like HDP is doing. In metainfo.xml HDP public repo link is given. BigTOP also uses the HDP public repo(only UTIL one) hosted on amazon but they also have their own BIGTOP repo.

How can i use these repos(consider only HDFS i want to install in my Custom Stack( TJ1.0) like HDP2.3) or is there something i did'nt looked into like created my own repo from plain vanilla apache hadoop rpms.

Any guidance will be appreciated.

That's the problem, it is not easy, I was hoping you'd be able to get it done and publish an article here.

Re: I am trying to install plain vanilla apache hadoop using Ambari. Need help on this.

I have created the new stack named "test" in ambari. Now I wanted to use the custom-services available in the ambari -server into the new stack "test".

Like how HDP extended the common-services (i.e,HDFS) from the version 2.0.6, we have also extended the custom-services(HDFS) in the metainfo.xml belowm

/var/lib/ambari-server/resources/stacks/TEST/1.0/services/HDFS"

<metainfo> <schemaVersion>2.0</schemaVersion> <services> <service> <name>HDFS</name> <extends>common-services/HDFS/2.1.0.2.0</extends> </service> </services> </metainfo>

When we try to install the HDFS from ambari host(web-ui) we could not succeed and the ambari-server.log for your reference, request you to help to overcome this scenario.
