Is it possible to do major upgrade HDP from 2.6.2 to 3.1.0 without Ambari?

One of our test environment (low env), we are not using/installed ambari and we have installed only HDP 2.6.2 with phoenix 4.7.0. Now we are planning to upgrade hdp from 2.6.2 to 3.1.0.

Is it possible to do major upgrade with out ambari?

If Yes, do we have any guidance document to upgrade with out Ambari, using linux (Red Hat) commands.

If No, what would be the recommendations to do upgrade?
