i greatly appreciate the information however when i try to use the url in your response i get a page not found error.  can you re-send the link or direct me to the forum where you found the solution.  i'm hoping it details more about how to setup and start the hiveserver2 service that you reference. thanks again for your persistence and keeping me in the loop.

I am trying to connect to Hive Server via Cloudera ODBC. Could use Default Cloudera login manager credentials
