Safely closing and upgrading physical host?

Safely closing and upgrading physical host?

Rising Star

Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade one of my physical host to add more memory.

I would like to know what's the best practise to achieve this.

Thanks.

Hi zhuangmz,

If you can schedule downtime for your entire Hadoop cluster, and stop all services, that would be the easiest.

You can do that easily from Cloudera Manager.

Otherwise you first need to check what Hadoop services are running on that host, and think carefully how shutting down services on that host could affect other parts of the cluster.

So, the safest way is to:
1. shutdown the whole cluster
2. upgrade hardware
3. cloudera manager configuration
4. restart the cluster

If I only upgrade simple service for example hadoop datanode, and I'm sure nobody will request hdfs data:
1. stop all roles in this host
2. stop cloudera-scm-agent
3. upgrade hardware
4. start cloudera-scm-agent
5. start all roles in this host
