Select with cyrillic characters in HIVE

New Contributor

Hi! I new in HADOOP. I have HDP-2.4.0.0 stack installed. (Ambari Version 2.2.1.1). When i perform a query in Ambari Hive View with cyrillic characters in select: for example

select * from mytable where columnname like '%a%' (a - is cyrillic a)

i see that my query transform to:

select * from mytable where columnname like '%0%'

so any cyrillic characters transform to something else.

I have installed HUE too (from the sameHDP-2.4.0.0 stack). The same query in Beeswax return error:

Error occurred executing hive query: Incorrect string value: '\xD0\xB0%' L...' for column 'query' at row 1

Why? Help me please! (Sorry for my bad english)

@Alex Sergeev

Hive does support Unicode characters within data. Please refer to Hive 7142 to check the serde encoding to be set for details:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HIVE-7142

Thanks and Regards,

Sindhu

You can use Unicode string on data/comments, but cannot use for database/table/column name.

You can use UTF-8 encoding for Hive data. However, other encodings are not supported (HIVE-7142 introduce encoding for LazySimpleSerDe, however, the implementation is not complete and not address all cases).

(it's from

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/Hive/User+FAQ#UserFAQ-DoesHivesupportUnicode? )

and as I know cyrillic included in UTF-8

It seems like bug in Ambari Hive View. I receive result to query

select * from mytable where columnname like '%0%'

but not to my original query

Can you please run same query from hive cli or beeline and share the result?
