What is role of memory in Solr Server?

I know, memory is used for creating the inverted index and also while reverting inverted index before serving results.

do all indexes stored in memory always?

Say my data is 100 GB and all columns are indexed i.e. 100GB data is indexed.

Do i need 100GB RAM to store indexed data? or can i live with say ~32GB RAM and store indexed data on disk.

Can some one please point me to documents thats talk about internals of Solr or write/index path of SOLR?

thanks in advance!!
