Will a column-based Hive-policy in Ranger work towards a view in Hive when doing a "select *"?

Will a column-based Hive-policy in Ranger work towards a view in Hive when doing a "select *"?

New Contributor

Hi all,

I have created a view in Hive with column A and B. Now I would like to create a Ranger policy for Hive that only gives access to column A. This setup works if I run a query with "select A" but not if I run a query with "select *".

Does someone know how it is possible to make the "Select *" statement work (and only show column A) without me having to create a second view in Hive?

Best regards,
Martin

@Martin Søgaard If you create a ranger policy granting access to only Column A and try Select * the operation will be denied as the request is to access all columns (both A and B). Please try creating a masking policy so that column B data is masked for above case.
