HDFS Balancer can run in the background and there is a controllable bandwidth that it consumes. In general, on a large cluster it can run continuously, but it is a must after adding new nodes to have a healthy system. Note for large clusters a single convergence run can be a full day or more (that shouldn't scare you away though), let it run. Also, some customers reported that had more stable experience when adding nodes in small batches of a few instead of adding a full rack at once, for example.

Sounds like https://hortonworks.jira.com/browse/BUG-41647. Does your Hive JDBC URL contain FQDN? If not, YARN config page won't load in Ambari 2.1.0. This was fixed in 2.1.1.

@Pardeep Hope this helps There are several good documents online. Link
In CMS the young and old generation heap space are physically differentiated. But in the case of G1 they are logical. This is achieved by dividing the total heap space into number of regions (2000) and the regions are identified whether they belong to young or old space. Compaction of the heap space is done as part of the collection process which was not the case in CMS. G1 collector tries to meet user specified target for application pause time during the collection process.

It should not matter to Ambari. During the installation phase, it will have the RPM already there so it will be able to move to the next step. You should make a backup of your configuration file as it will be overwritten. Do you experience a different behaviour ?

Ambari does push towards installing PQS on each region server. The only "security consideration" I see is a single port opened to clients on each node, so I wouldn't worry too much about this presently. Some concrete results on stateless queries behind a generic load balancer should be landing within the year (2015).

@Chakra You may also have Hive data declared as an external table, in which case this data sits in a file store outside of HDFS. In such a case, as long as you back up your Hive meta store, you should be good, assuming the external file store has its own backup and restore poiclies.
