Hi, I'm trying to execute the following query on Hive and everytime it throws java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space error: Query: SELECT truckid, avg(mpg) avgmpg FROM truck_mileage GROUP BY @Srivatsa Nori ,

We can adjust hive-tez parameters from Ambari from admin user(if this is not Sandbox). If it is Sandbox, you can also login to Ambari by user credentials raj_ops/raj_ops. If not, you can set the password for admin if you haven't done already. Run this command on the terminal:

ambari-admin-password-reset

After login to Ambari, go to the Hive page, click on Configs tab and make the changes in two properties:

  • hive.tez.container.size: from 200 to 682 MB (as recommended by Ambari)
  • hive.tez.java.opts: -> from -server -Xmx200m -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true to -server -Xmx512m -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true.

Let us know if this works.

Thanks a lot for the response. I made the changes suggested and restarted HIVE. This resolved the issue.

Best Regards,

Srivatsa.
