Cloudera Manager Server Won't Start: TimeoutException

Cloudera Manager Server Won't Start: TimeoutException

I am trying to follow installation path B, manual installation using packages.  Path A was ruled out because I'm installing this on Linux Mint.

 

I am also trying to set up everything to use an external MySQL database.  I have already created the mandatory databases and users.  I have even tested logging in to my MySQL database as one of the users, it works.

 

I am on this step now:

but when I start the server, it throws many exceptions.  Initially I have this stack:

I think there is a chance this is related to the 'my.cnf' file.  I tried to follow the instructions given as closely as possible to create that.  Here is my 'my.cnf' file:
