How to auto start/stop cloudera hadoop components using CLI?

I am working on the automation which should start/stop the cloudera hadoop components before the VMs will be shutdown. I am looking for the solution on how to automate the graceful stop/start of hadoop components prior to stopping the servers. I have read a lot of documents online regarding REST API? Just want to know if  there's any documents that would clearly describe/discuss the full implementation of this. Or is there any other way to automate it other than rest api? I am new to this platform and need some help and guidance on how to do it. I am using cloudera version 6.3.1. Thanks.
