Oracle Java SE 11 support

New Contributor

Will Oracle Java 11 be supported? On January 2019 Oracle will end the public updates for commercial users for Oracle Java SE 8. This means that Oracle will no longer make security updates available without an Oracle Java SE subscription. https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/eol-135779.html From then on Oracle JDK 11 and OpenJDK 11 will be the same.

@Russel,

Great question.

Currently we are in the process of certifying OpenJDK 8 for CDH

Our aim is to ceritify on Java 11 (both Oracle and OpenJDK).

Bottom line is that we do realize what is coming and we are working to ensure that we can certify that CDH will work with both OpenJDK and Oracle JDK.

Thanks for the quick reply, that’s great news and quite a relief.

 Are there any updates on this?

Hi @Nate,

Based on the latest documentation:

https://www.cloudera.com/documentation/enterprise/6/release-notes/topics/rg_java_requirements.html

OpenJDK 8 is supported in Cloudera Enterprise 6.1.0 and higher, as well as Cloudera Enterprise 5.16.1 and higher.

Hope this helps.

Hi Li,

Does cloudera(5.16.1 or 6.x) support Java 11?. As per the documentation, it says OpenJDK or Oracle JDK 1.8

Thanks n Regards,

I am curious about the Java 11 support as well.  RHEL8's (and thus CentOS 😎 default version of Java is 11.

@AntonyN,

We are testing compatibilty with JDK 11 now but we don't know in which release support will land at this time.

We are working to get JDK 11 support as part of 6.3.0 release, but we are not at a point where we can commit to that yet.

If you have any questions, let us know.

So at this point it’s no longer “if” you will support but simply “when” you will?

Super Guru

@Nate,

We have done a great deal of compliance testing already, so, while I prefer not to speak in absolutes, I agree that we do fully intend on introducing support for JDK 11 (both Oracle and OpenJDK).

We have started writing up documentation for upgrading to JDK 11 in anticipation of this, so we are on track.
