VM internet access problem

New Contributor

Hi everyone,

I installed quickstart-vm-5.4.2.0-virtualbox on my laptop(windows 8). I don't have internet access but hue and starting tutorials work fine. The original network setting is NAT, and I have tried to switch to bridged internet, but with that I can't even use hue and tutorials. Here is the content of ifconfig:

eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 08:00:27:2B:B0:8D
inet addr:10.0.2.15 Bcast:10.0.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:20 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:382 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:2260 (2.2 KiB) TX bytes:32042 (31.2 KiB)

eth2 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 08:00:27:80:FF:EE
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:2300671 (2.1 MiB) TX bytes:11628 (11.3 KiB)

lo Link encap:Local Loopback

Can someone help please! Thanks a lot!

I've seen this problem before and it should be fixed in the next release,
but I may have a work-around for you. During boot, the VM will try to
inteligently select the best IP address to bind the 'quickstart.cloudera'
hostname to (as Hadoop configuration is very closely tied to the hostname).
It'll try to use the eth0 if it's there, but if not it falls back to the
loopback device. In your case and one other I've seen, the virtual NIC ends
up being eth > 0, and the VM doesn't check for that.

The easiest workaround for you would be to edit the file
common/root/usr/bin/cloudera-quickstart-ip and replace line 24 that says
"DEV='eth0'" with "DEV='eth1'" (or eth2, if you'd prefer things to treat
that as the primary interface). After rebooting it should work.

I am facing a similar issue. I installed cloudera-quickstart-vm-5.12.0-0-virtualbox on my Windows 10 host machine. I tried your suggestion, however, I do not have access to root/usr/bin
