> java.util.concurrent.ExecutionException: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space This means the datanode ran out of heap. How many datanodes do you have and how many blocks does this one hold? Are all your datanodes evenly filled up? What is the heap setting for your datanodes?

Just FYI, setting permissions to 777 is never a good idea. Please modify the user and group ownership of the dfs.name.dir directories to the right ones (hdfs:hadoop) and set the right permissions (700). Within this, the required directories will be auto-created with the right permissions

Is nothing starting or just some services? Is Cloudera Manager running at least? Please ensure that you have a minimum of 4GB memory for the virtual machine, 8GB would be nice if you can. Check the Cloudera Manager logs under /var/log/cloudera-scm-server. What do you see in those files?

The first place to check for startup failure would be the datanode logs. There should be one or more exceptions logged before the shutdown

Pig 0.14 is quite recent (Nov 2014), we'd have to perform a lot of testing before including it in a GA release. So you could roll it out on your own for now till CDH includes it. You could subscribe to the Announcements forum to find out when a new release of CDH comes out and check the release notes

The files within the parcel are not modified after installation. When you make configuration changes and restart the role, Cloudera Manager will send the updated files to the agent which will stash it under /var/run/cloudera-scm-agent/process. Any client configuration changes will appear in /etc//conf You can read about how Cloudera Manager manages roles and services in this blog post. http://blog.cloudera.com/blog/2013/07/how-does-cloudera-manager-work/
