Can you paste the contents of your /etc/hosts file? Also run this command on your CM host as well as hslave and paste the results here. # python -c "import socket; print socket.getfqdn(); print socket.gethostbyname(socket.getfqdn())"

This is a classic error where name services are not configured correctly. Please include each node in the /etc/hosts of each node. The contents should be similar to 10.10.10.10 hostname.domain.com hostname If you are using DNS, ensure each node's hostname can be resolved from every other node

I just tried installing Cloudera Manager with the same steps on a new Ubuntu 14.04 host and it worked fine. Are you able to look into the files in /var/log/cloudera-manager-installation and see what might be the problem? You can post the problematic logs here as well and we can try to assist

sources.list contains repos for "trusty" whereas the earlier post was looking at wheezy-cdh5. So I am a bit confused here. How did you encounter the error message regarding Wheezy?

If you use Cloudera Manager, you can look at the list of hosts and try to recomission any nodes. If not, you need to look at the file pointed to by the dfs.hosts property and ensure the new IP address or host name is listed in it. Then as TGrayson mentioned, you should run sudo -u hdfs hadoop dfsadmin -refreshNodes" Let us know if it helped.

The message says it cannot find "contrib/binary-i386" which means the OS might be 32-bit. Are you able to show us the output of "uname -a"?
