@sraghavan. RHEL 7 is the one I've seen most in the wild but it ultimately depends on what in-house skills you have. Go with what your company is best at and is supported by HDP.

@Neeraj Sabharwal, @Artem Ervits I'm seeing both the ODBC connector (can use for Hive) as well as a native HDFS connector. I'll try these. Thanks! 2016-02-03-08-33-36.png

Thanks @Neeraj Sabharwal but, unfortunately, Hive is not listed as a possible source. 2016-02-03-08-29-56.png

@Andrea Squizzato as @Artem Ervits suggested I'd start with Flume. Flume can handle multiple channels. I think this is the design you're looking for: 2016-02-03-07-42-02.png Or alternatively you can avoid the aggregation and write directly into the HDFS folders http://flume.apache.org/FlumeUserGuide.html#hdfs-sink. You may also want to consider writing directly into a Hive sink http://flume.apache.org/FlumeUserGuide.html#hive-sink

@ali khawaja have you tried to explicitly set the PATH to the
derby home? Try doing this through the Windows environment variables. You can
also try to set them in the CLI as shown here:
https://db.apache.org/derby/docs/10.4/adminguide/tadmincbdjhhfd.html. Also,
make sure you have rights to execute the jar file. You could try the command
java org.apache.derby.drda.NetworkServerControl
start -h myhost -p 1621 and see the results.

We would like an efficient, near realtime method to ingest mainframe data into HDFS. An open source solutions is preferred but will also accept 3rd party suggestions.

@luc tiber I will say you'll learn a lot! Also, at the end of it you'll better appreciate the ease of use provided by HDP. 🙂

@luc tiber is there a pressing reason you are not using Hortonworks HDP? We're 100% open source and we provide a number of good installation guides. http://docs.hortonworks.com/HDPDocuments/Ambari/Ambari-2.2.0.0/index.html. The last time I installed directly from Apache was in 2012 and it was painful.

@yjiang according to the SAP VORA install doc (see pg 12) http://help.sap.com/Download/Multimedia/hana_vora/SAP_HANA_Vora_Installation_Developer_Guide_en.pdf you can use 2.3 with RHEL 7 but SAP only supports Spark 1.4.1 or 1.5.2.
