LOL... just checked the dates. It has been quite a while since Neta Je posted this (09-03-2015!) I just saw your response, @Koti_Karri and followed along ;-).

@Neta Je, If Hive and Hue used the embedded database as their database, then the steps you took to delete the CM database may have also deleted your Hive, Hue, and other databases. If you took a backup before deleting /var/lib/cloudera-scm-server-db you may be able to recover, but it is tough to say what to do without knowing if Hive and Hue were configured to use the embeded postgres that stores its files in /var/lib/cloudera-scm-server-db/ Ben

@nitinz, Hi, If you don't have the cloudera-manager-server-db-2 package, how do you have the db.mgmt.properties file? Did you remove it at some point? In any case, a couple things: (1) You don't need Activity Monitor role unless you are using MapReduce1. You can not use that role. (2) It appears you have not entered hostname and port in the Database Setup (3) If you do have a /etc/cloudera-scm-server/db.mgmt.properties, please remove it from that directory. It is possible that its presence is causing problems for the connection test as you should not have db.mgmt.properties if you are not using the embedded database. All database configurations except for Cloudera Manager's are stored in Cloudera Manager's database, not in flat files.

@nitinz, What we need to know is at what step this is failing. Can you take screen shots to help? prepare db is only for Cloudera Manager and the error you showed was for AmonTestDatabaseConnection. that implies that you connected to CM and started the wizard to create the cluster. It is very important when looking for help to present the context for your questions/problems so we can understand clearly what the situation is. That said, I am worried you are running into problems because you installed: cloudera-manager-server-db-2 Please run "rpm -qa |grep cloudera" on your Cloudera Manager host and post the output. Before we get too far, we need to be sure that you are not trying to use an external db when the embedded db is configured for use.

hmmm... db.mgmt.properties does not apply. That is only for the embedded postgres DB. Were you using that before and are switching to a new DB? If you have a "/etc/cloudera-scm-server/db.mgmt.properties" file, then that means you have installed the embedded db. Can you give us more of the history of this cluster and what you are looking to do?

@nitinz The error means that the password you entered does not match the password for the database. At least that was the return code from the attempted DB operation inside Cloudera Manager. You should verify you can authenticate outside Cloudera Manager (with psql) for instance with the same connection information.

@DanielWhite, Can you clarify what you mean by "source server?" Really, the answer is No. Your source configuration dictates what NameNode(s) to communicate with. Your source's NameNodes tell clients where to get blocks. Those blocks can be on any DataNode in the source cluster. On the target side where the MapReduce Job runs, the Resource Manager decides on which nodes the Mappers will run.

That's great news! BDR has a lot of moving parts, so it can be super tricky to debug so I hope once you get the connectivity worked out that it is smooth sailing.

@alexmc6, I talked with the Cloudera engineering team and indeed, you are not supposed to create a peer from/to the same CM instance. In fact, our UI blocks that unless you trick it by using a different hostname or ip address. We will work on improving our documentaiton to explain how to replicate between clusters managed by the same Cloudera Manager. If you have any follow-up questions, we're happy to help. Ben

@alexmc6, A peer is normally only created if replicating from a cluster that has another Cloudera Manager. If you have two clusters using the same Cloudera Manager, your replication schedule should let you choose which Hive server and cluster will be the source and target. If that isn't working out, please show a screen shot of what selections are availavble in your replication schedule.
