Changing the disk type to gp2 looks to have solved the issue. I have recreated the cluster 2 times and it has not failed. Thanks!

There is no such AMI matained by Cloudera. You can install R using a custom bootstrap script that Director runs or build your own AMI with those bits pre-installed.

Hi Kirk - > 1. The application log doesn't reveal the aws CLI commands that are run. Is there a way to > see those commands? Either before (as a dry run feature) or after? Cloudera Director integrates with the AWS API using the Java SDK. There is no straightforward way to translate those method calls as AWS CLI commands you can run standalone. In theory you should be able to figure out how to use the AWS CLI to start similar instances by inspecting the existing ones. > 2. The nodes that get provisioned do not have anything in the /etc/hosts file. How are they resolving each other? > Typically, the hosts file configuration is critical to getting Cloudera Manager to run successfully. We expect DNS configuration to be handled outside of Cloudera Director using different mechanisms: VPC configuration to use AmazonProvidedDNS via DHCP Options Sets custom bootstrap script that Director runs to configure the hostname scripts embedded into a custom AMI that configure the proper hostname during boot and handle DNS registration Cloudera Director doesn't attempt to perform any DNS configs.

Sorry, the ticket is in our internal JIRA. We're targeting 1.1.2 and 1.5.0 releases for these fixes. Here's a link to the other message thread discussing the proxy issue http://community.cloudera.com/t5/Cloudera-Director-Cloud-based/cloudera-director-bootstrap-failed-on-quot-hostname-Unknown-host/m-p/26291#U26291.

Great! I've also missed that in your initial post. This sounds like something we can warn about during configuration file parsing. I will file an internal feature request to improve it. Do placement groups improve things from a network latency perspective for you as expected?

Forgot to mention. You also need to install Oracle JDK by doing: sudo apt-get install oracle-j2sdk1.7

> What would happen if I tried adding the nodes back in via the manager 'add new hosts to cluster'? The behavior is undefined. Director needs to do that on its own. It can't deal with external cluster topology modifications.

The director actually doesn't perform terribly on a t2.micro and I don't recall getting any exceptions or OOM errors. The manager and cluster nodes were the issue. We're already running a CDH 5 cluster with Spark. I'm interested in using director as a replacement to our current methods of creating/deploying/scaling/managing clusters. Will try creating a more realistic cluster now.

Hi Natty! Have you been able to successfully run Director? Any feedback for future releases?

We were planning on using director to build new CDH clusters, and expand existing ones. That's, well, that's pretty much it 🙂
