Hello, is it possible to upgrade from cdh 4 with out Cloudera Manager to  cdh5 with Cloudera Manager, and perform the upgrade so that data is not lost.

The Migration into CM would entail manually translating your non-default CDH configurations into cloudera managers configuration for CDH.  There is not an automated way to do that.

As @Grizzly indicated, I would think you would do this in two phases: 1) install CM over your existing CDH cluster (see this thread), then 2) upgrade via CM to CDH5.
