Hi, is there a update to base SOLRthe current revision of Solr in CDH 5.x (a fork of Solr 4.1.x while the public Solr project supports only the 5.x and 6.x versions.) When is core SOLR distribution which is part of CDH going to be update. Versin 5.x and 6.x add more valuable functionality which is there is public version. Is there a roadmap available for what is upcoming for SOLR in future release of CDH.

Cloudera guarantees backwards compatibility in our minor releases. Although
you see the Solr major version staying the same, we continuously backport
fixes and security patches and even minor features as long as they don't
break backwards compatibility for our many 100s of production customers on
Cloudera Search (i.e. Solr in CDH).
Meanwhile, our search engineering team here at Cloudera, including many of
the Solr committers (e.g. Yonik Seeley, Mark Miller, Wolfgang Hoschek, et
al) are actively working on new major features and rearchitectural changes
to improve scale, performance, etc - all the goodness of our commitment and
investment in the community. The major changes in Solr 5 have broken a lot
of previous behavior, it also comes with major changes that brings a lot of
risk. We choose to not put our production customers at risk, while still
moving upstream forward with innovation. Solr 6 is now out and maturing.
This is where we think production maturity will evolve. Solr 6 will
eventually land in a future major release, once production quality is
there. And it will be amazing!! All the work of our team and the community
will then be available for new innovative applications. Please stay tuned
for updates on the progress of Solr 6 and please don't hesitate reaching
out to me if you need a more in depth session on what will come. I'm eva

I'm interested here too. The solr version has remained the same at 4.10.3 since CDH 5.4. There are large improvements in indexing speed between 4.10 and 5.2 as I understand it, so when is this going to happen?

Great, thank you for the information!

I was asking because my project could potentially have an incompatibility with solr 4.10, and I believe 5.2 or higher is the version that would be necessary if that is the case. However, since you've indicated that you do backport
fixes and security patches and even minor features, its possible that the potential issue has already been addressed. I'll be in touch if its not!

Any further update on the timeline for solr 6 to show up in Cloudera?

I'm expecting a newer version of Solr (hopefully 6.x) as part of CDH 6 in the coming months, noting there are no firm time frames or version informaion available.  CDH 6 is a major version and breaking backwards compatability is much more tolerable.

So it's been 16 months since the OP and we're still at 4.10.

Is there any hope of solr 6 soon? My project is getting close to the point we might have to leave Cloudera behind if not, and I really don't want to do that.

We have Solr 4.10.3 on CDH 5.11.2

Which solr version could we upgrade to without being a major CDH upgrade?

avatar
CDH6 has rebased to Solr 7. Given the large new set of features, it is included in a major release and not a minor release. If you need the functionality in Solr 7, the recommendation would be to upgrade to CDH6.

Yeah, but there's also no support for Accumulo in CDH6, so now we can't upgrade for a completely different reason. You guys are killing me lol
