hbase standalone cannot start when installed independently of CDH but on an edge node with CDH

I installed a CDH cluster.  All services are up and running everything is great.....cluster is kerberized.  I then download hbase tar ball from apache onto this edge node, extract contents, start this hbase in standalone mode (one would think independent of CDH bits).  And it fails to start saying it cannot find keytabs.  I then rename /opt/cloudera/parcels/CDH/lib to /opt/cloudera/parcels/CDH/libMOVED and THEN I can start this standalone hbase extracted content just fine.  I cannot determine what is getting set where when the lib directory is in place.  Any help with this so that a standalone Hbase can run in parrellel withouth modifying this /opt/cloudera/parcels/CDH/lib directory would be great.  Thanks much.
