When managing multiple clusters with the same instance of Cloudera Manager, each cluster can be on a different version and can be upgraded independent of each other. While having all three environments managed by the same Cloudera Manager seems attractive, it doesn't offer the flexibility of having three truly independent clusters, each with its own Cloudera Manager instance.

The .bin installer has to be run as root. Please have a look at the logs under /var/log/cloudera-manager-installer or you can post them here for assistance.

From what I understand till now, the issues only appear on datanodes which are containing a large number of blocks and these datanodes contain far more blocks than the healthy ones. This can be remedied by running the HDFS Balancer. In CDH 5.x, bug HDFS-6621 affects balancer performance. It is fixed in the GA releases 5.1.4 and 5.2.0 (and later versions like 5.3.0). It is not fixed in any 5.0.x version. So please consider upgrading to one of the above releases for the fix.

It might be best to run the HDFS Balancer on a regular basis to remedy this. If you're running CDH 5.0.x or CDH 5.1.[0-3]. then consider upgrading to CDH 5.1.4 or CDH 5.2.0 for the fix to HDFS-6621.

It is possible that the datanode is handling more blocks or dealing with more traffic than its heap will allow. So there might be frequent full garbage collection occurring which can cause such events. How many blocks do these datanodes have? What is the heap setting?

The patch is part of CDH 5.1.4 and CDH 5.2.0 (and later versions). You can simply upgrade to v5.1.4 from v5.1.0 for the fix.

Visit the configuration page of the service you'd like to manage, then search for "Automatically Restart Process". You should see this option for each role within the service.

Thank you for the report. I have reproduced the issue and logged a bug report internally. Meanwhile you have two workarounds 1. Use the Path B installer like you already have 2. Download the .bin installer from CM5.2.1 specifically from http://archive.cloudera.com/cm5/installer/5.2.1/cloudera-manager-installer.bin The .bin installer is released with each version of Cloudera Manager but regardless it always installs the latest version. So even if you download the .bin from the 5.2.1 URL, it will install v5.3.0 (released just a few hours back). This is by design.

The slow download is a known issue. We use Amazon CloudFront as the CDN. The caches get populated only on first download and there are multiple ones around the world. So depending on which CF endpoint you reach, based on your geographical location, it might be slow or fast. If you attempted the installation again now, the downloads will be much quicker. Thanks for the apt listing, I'll try the installer in a few hours
