@Aditya Sirna has found the solution to this, and documented at https://community.hortonworks.com/articles/174061/mbind-operation-not-permitted-when-running-hive-sh-1.html in short: This happens when you run a java app in docker and the java app (e.g.: hive shell) has JVM argument: -XX:+UseNUMA Docker doesn't support this feature currently.
