@Neeraj Sabharwal Sorry for the late reply. Yes, creating an ambari user named "hdfs" with root privilege solved the problem. Thanks. 🙂 Anyways, through the command prompt I was able to switch to user - "hdfs" and then create the folder in the root path.

Thanks for the response. Could you please elaborate a bit more on the steps for creating a HDFS user?

Recently I accessed hortonworks sandbox in azure. I tried to create a new directory in the root but the "new directory" button seems to be disabled. However, I am able to create sub directories from the available root directories. I understand that this is a problem at access level but I am not sure how to gain access.
