The java hello world of Hadoop is WordCount, start with that, then advance to writing user defined functions in pig and hive, then try out Spark and Storm using Java API. First step is https://hadoop.apache.org/docs/current/hadoop-mapreduce-client/hadoop-mapreduce-client-core/MapReduceTutorial.html. there are many answers to your question.

Hmmm I suppose it depends how you see the question. Pretty sure everybody uses generics but you are right I haven't implemented a generic class myself in a MapReduce job before. Pretty sure a lot of libraries do it but yourself during coding. Not really. I think the reason for the question might help.

@Mohammed Ibrahim a) I would go with the Hortonworks Sandbox, if you are doing standalone. b) Here is a lab for setting up HDP on a single node HDP https://github.com/shivajid/HortonworksOperationsWorkshop/blob/master/Lab1.md This will use HDP 2.3, you can make modifications to do HDP 2.4
