Turns out this is all due to PUBLIC-IP -> Public FQDN usage in /etc/hostname When I changed public ip to private ip, everything was OK. Check this post https://community.hortonworks.com/questions/83429/failed-to-startup-hdfs-namenode.html So, same thing happens on AWS EC2, RHEL 7
